Progress Update

The Bane of Technology

Well, my laptop was sent off on monday.

And I’ve been waiting…

and waiting…

and waiting…

No, I couldn’t bear it any longer – but ringing up the company only revealed that they’re waiting for a part to come in, and they’re not expecting it well into next week ><

So, that’s more precious time wasted – so far I count around 3 weeks of training time wasted, which would’ve been enough to get me a considerable way through the support skills I’ve been meaning to train to Level V.

The Blog

One thing I’ve discovered is that it’s very hard to talk about EVE like this when you’re not playing it. I’ve been trying to come up with ideas of posts I could write while I’m not playing, but I haven’t got anywhere with them.

On the plus side, this means that it’ll be a relief to get back into EVE when my computer arrives,  and with any luck I’ll be able to start posting regularly again.

Blogger?

While perusing a number of the other EVE blogs, I’ve noticed that the majority of them seem to be hosted on Google’s blog platform, Blogger. Though I’m aware I don’t have must of a reader-base yet, I’m curious to hear what you think about the WordPress vs. Blogger debate? And, more importantly, is it worth switching to Blogger while there isn’t much to lose, as opposed to realizing later and then trying to import archive after archive of posts and comments?

Testing 1… 2… 3…

This post is also a test post for twitterfeed, which should hopefully post new blog posts to my EVE Twitter Account (@tyrodia ) automatically now.

That’s all for now!

Broken Stuff.

My laptop broke :(

This is less than ideal. Not catastrophic, thankfully, because I use Dropbox (highly, highly reccomended) to back up my most important files. However, this laptop has had problems before, namely that the hard drive fried (the reason that I now back up important stuff on Dropbox!).

The problem seems to be related to the graphics card – a couple of times while playing EVE, I’d get the “Display Driver [string of characters] has stopped working but has recovered”, and the screen would flash black for a couple of seconds. I thought it was just a temporary fault, or an outdated driver, so I checked the driver – up to date.

Next time I booted my computer, the boot screen had lines down the logo. Successive screens had strange dashed white lines running the full length of the screen, and when it reached where it should display the Windows logo, it blue-screened with the error message (“Tried to load a display driver but the operation timed out”).

Even more annoying is that the laptop boots just fine in safe mode – it’s actually where I’m writing this from. But you can’t play EVE in safe mode (DirectX can’t run).

This leaves me in the annoying position of knowing that I have finished my last skill’s training. I know that right now, Tyrodia is sitting there idle doing absolutely nothing. All this valuable time being wasted :(

Ah well, i’ll just have to wait it out. Now to run and check if my warranty is still up (pleasepleasepleaseplease).

Fitting Difficulties

Having trained Weapon Upgrades to 4 to allow use of a Web on my Rifter, I happily logged on, opened the fittings panel and clicked the “Put Online” button.

:(

:(

Damn.

10 days to train Weapon Upgrades 5 for the right amount, too :(

Life Goals

One of the things I found when I looked at EVE  before I bought a suscription was that a lot of people complained of getting bored. I saw nicknames like “Spreadsheets in space” and “The spreadsheet MMO”.

This was obviously not a good thing.

However, the thing that these people missed was that EVE is a goal orientated game. The strategy that most MMO’s take is to lead you from place to place, feeding you content as you go – this keeps you as the consumer occupied, and there is very little thought required.

This is where EVE differs – the sandbox is both a very interesting and involving world, but you are dropped into it with hardly any information about what to do or where to go. Everything is out there, all you need to do is go out and do it!

Plenty of Ships!

Maybe I'll make it my goal to have a hanger like this! :D

The people that found EVE boring just needed to do one thing: make goals for themselves. As soon as you make a goal, short or long term, you have something to work towards, and you can start finding things to do to get you closer to that goal.

So, I’m going to list my goals for EVE. There’ll be a page for it, and I’ll most likely be adding them for a while, but the basic ones are up now (check them outhere!).

Hopefully as I get older, I’ll get to fulfill some!

So, what about you? What are your short and long (money no object) goals for yourself in the Universe that is EVE?

A New Chapter

Eve Wins. That is all.

I thought for ages: I was hoping to start my first post with some witty comment. Some inspiring anecdote that would instantly grab your attention…

…No such luck – nothing came – and so, this blog begins!

About Me

My name is Tyrodia.    I’m Caldari.     My character joined the game on 18/2/2009, meaning that at the time of writing, I’m exactly 1 year and 11 days old.

I am currently a member of the Open University of Celestial Hardship, and I’m loving it!   Though I’ve been involved in a 0.0 war before, I didn’t really get the experience I think I would’ve if I’d had more previous PvP experience, so when I heard about Black Claw’s new 0.0 training corp, I jumped at the oppertunity to join it.

As per to the corp’s reccomendation, I’m training to become excellent at T1 frigate PvP. Tyrodia has about 5-6 million skill points right now (it’s not higher because I took a large break in the middle of the year).

In my short time in EvE, quite a lot has happened – I’ve been a PvP Trainee, then in Factional Warfare, then a Trader (not a particularly successful one, I might add), then part of a huge 0.0 war effort, and now, a humble PvP trainee again.

What this blog is!

Well, I guess right now it’s just a place for me to write :)   Stuff that happens, thoughts, things I learn, my own opinion (every blogger has their own opinion) on the latest things in the EvE community…

And from here, nothing is certain!
